Two of the three cars that Russians buy are crossovers

The crossovers and SUVs (SUV segment) in Russia in January and February accounted for 66.6 percent of sales in the market of new cars, the Avtostat agency found out. Despite the high share, the popularity of SUV is decreasing: in the first two months of 2024, it reached 70.5 percent. This is due to the fact that the volumes of the sale of crossovers and SUVs decreased stronger than the market, by 14.2 and 9.3 percent, respectively.

In total, in January-February 2025, the Russians acquired 111.4 thousand new crossovers and SUVs. For comparison: over the same two months, the volume of B-class cars increased by 4.8 percent to 39.1 thousand units. In this regard, their share in the market also increased-from 20.3 percent in 2024 to 23.4 percent in 2025. Avtostat experts associate this trend with the fact that the sale of cars of Chinese brands is declining, and domestic cars are growing. While the “Chinese” in the vast majority are represented in the SUV segment, Russian brands mainly offer B-class models.

The total share of SUV and B-class sales is 90 percent of the total sales of new cars in Russia.

AvtoVAZ answered rumors about a decrease in Lada Aura’s circulations, this was expected: in Russia, sales of new cars fell sharply, how many cars were sold all over the world in February

If we talk about popular brands and models of crossovers and SUVs in the Russian market, then the February rating is as follows: the top 5 includes Haval Jolion, Chery Tigo 7 Pro Max, Lada Niva Travel and Niva Legend, as well as the Chery Tiggo 4 Pro.

In February, the Russian market for new cars for the first time in almost two years went minus. The Russians bought 78 thousand new cars, and this is 24.9 percent less than in the same month of 2024.
