Republican Senator Bernie Moreno announced his intention to introduce a bill in Congress that would significantly tighten the current ban on Chinese cars in the United States. Speaking at an automobile forum on the eve of the New York International Auto Show, the politician said that his goal is to completely eliminate the possibility of Chinese cars entering the American market, Carscoops reports.
“We will not allow Chinese automakers to enter this market. We will prevent this cancer from entering,” Moreno said, calling on allies to follow Washington’s example.
“I hope that Latin America, Mexico, Canada and Europe will now accept our standards,” the senator added.
The proposed measures would tighten restrictions in place since January 2025, when the Joe Biden administration banned the sale of Chinese passenger cars, citing risks of data leaks. Comparing the auto industry with the telecommunications sector, Moreno recalled the precedent of the ban on Huawei equipment.
The senator’s initiative found support among American automakers and industry associations, which had previously called on the government to maintain strict barriers against Chinese auto companies.
At the same time, the Chinese Embassy in Washington sharply condemned this proposal, accusing the United States of “trade protectionism.” The statement from the diplomatic department emphasizes that the bill contradicts the principles of fair competition.
The initiative comes as President Donald Trump prepares for a possible visit to China in May. Trump has previously expressed a willingness to allow Chinese automakers to build factories in the United States as long as they hire American workers, which contrasts with Senator Moreno’s hard-line stance.
