Volkswagen and SAIC will release a sedan and two crossovers for China

The SAIC-Volkswagen joint venture will launch three new models in the Chinese market in 2026, writes Car News China. Cars under the simple code names A, B and C will receive different power plants. The partners will share development efforts by joining Xpeng projects, but all three new products will be released on the Chinese market under Volkswagen nameplates.

Models under the letters A and B will be developed by the Chinese SAIC. The first is a sedan with a hybrid powertrain, which will not be completely new: it will be based on the Roewe D7. The second model will be an all-terrain vehicle with a sequential gasoline-electric system.

Volkswagen will be responsible for the third. It is expected that this will be a purely electric crossover on the CEA (China Electrical Architecture) platform, which the German company is developing together with Xpeng. In China, it should replace the MEB architecture, machines for which are in weak demand. In November it was reported that the first car on the new “trolley” will be put on the assembly line in 2025, and will enter the market in 2026.

According to the China Passenger Car Association (CPCA), SAIC-Volkswagen sold 1.05 million vehicles in January-November 2024. The result of the last month of autumn was 123 thousand cars, which is 5.9 percent more than for the same month in 2023. The joint venture accounts for about five percent of the Chinese market.

Earlier it became known that Volkswagen would get rid of the plant in Xinjiang. The site, owned by Volkswagen and SAIC, has recently caused trouble, including due to allegations of forced labor of local residents. Despite this, cooperation with SAIC was extended until 2040.
