Volkswagen is ready to release military equipment to get out of the crisis

The general director of the company Oliver Bluma, in an interview with ZDF, said that the concern is “fundamentally open to such topics.” The top manager explained: the topic of production of military equipment will be carefully studied. Volkswagen can return to the supply of the army in the wake of problems with the loading of factories in Osnabruk and Dresden: a contract with the defense industry is one of the possible options.

Volkswagen has entered the path of rigid economy: production plans are cut, and jobs are reduced. However, the plants in Osnabruk and Dresden are not going to close, while in 2026-2027 the life cycle of relevant models is approaching the end, and the successors are not determined. Therefore, the auto giant is looking for alternative business management options.

According to unofficial data, after the end of the VW T-ROC production in 2027, the plant in Osnabruk can be sold. Now the working group is analyzing possible loading options, but there were no deep discussions with representatives of the Bundeswehr. The question of a possible resumption of the production of military equipment under the Volkswagen brand arose after the publication of the profit report: in the year, income fell by 31%.

Under the Volkswagen maternal brand, army equipment is produced in limited quantities, but the subsidiary of MAN is engaged in the production of trucks and special vehicles for the military. The German authorities are interested in new supplies, so automakers adapt to the situation: in early February, Mercedes-Benz showed new tractors for the army.
