Volkswagen plans to sell Lamborghini and Ducati due to restructuring

The German automaker Volkswagen is again considering the possibility of selling the premium brands Lamborghini and Ducati, Carscoops reports citing the Financial Times.

Discussions have resumed following the successful sale of a majority stake in Everllence’s marine propulsion business, which fetched a higher-than-expected valuation. However, the proceeds could quickly be swallowed up by a massive restructuring program that includes cutting up to 100,000 jobs and closing four factories.

Amid fierce competition from Chinese automakers and high costs of developing electric vehicles, advisers recommend that Volkswagen return to previously considered options, including selling Ducati or pursuing an IPO of Lamborghini. Lamborghini, which was acquired by Audi in 1998 for $110 million, is now valued at more than $22 billion, according to Bloomberg Intelligence. Ducati, purchased in 2012 for $909 million, is also seen as a valuable asset.

Despite the financial pressure, not all analysts are confident that the concern will part with profitable brands – Lamborghini earned $888 million last year alone. Volkswagen has so far refrained from commenting.
