Volkswagen will recall Jetta sedans due to short circuit and fire

61.4 thousand sedans of 2025 and 2026 sold in the USA and Canada required repairs. The reason is an oversight by workers at the Volkswagen assembly plant in Mexico, who forgot to connect the transmission ground wire on some cars. Because of this flaw, at least three fires broke out in the engine compartments of cars.

The first two reports of detected problems were received at Volkswagen dealerships in December 2025. An ongoing investigation revealed that the lack of ground left the oil pressure control unit electrical circuit open. This causes overheating of the wiring.

At the time of the decision to recall vehicles for inspection and repair, three vehicles had melted wiring and connectors, and three more had fires in the engine compartment. As a result of the incidents, only property damage was caused, no people were injured.

The manufacturer itself estimates the share of defective cars at less than 1% of the total number of recalled ones. But the risk of fire turned out to be too great: Volkswagen has tightened control on the assembly line since February 2026, and has now started sending out notifications to car owners. Dealers will check the ground wire and reconnect it if necessary, or replace damaged components. Before visiting the service, owners are advised to park their Jetta on the street, away from buildings.

Previously, the five most popular cars in Russia were named.
