As Carscoops reports, researchers from the Graz University of Technology (Austria) analyzed accident data for 2012–2024 and recreated real accidents using virtual models.
The main reason for the long-standing disparity lies in crash test standards. For decades, car safety has been judged on the “average” male body. Even the traditional “female” crash test dummy was simply a smaller version of the male one, fit for a petite woman. Moreover, 95% of real women are larger than this reference mannequin.
The researchers emphasize that women are not just “little men.” Differences in the structure of the pelvis, chest, shoulders and spine directly affect the nature of injuries. Female passengers are more likely to suffer serious injuries to the chest, spine, arms and legs. Those at greatest risk are older women.
Landing also plays a key role. Front passengers are more likely to lean back or sit further, reducing the effectiveness of airbags and seat belts. And since women are more likely to occupy the passenger seat, they are exposed to additional danger.
The good news is that the situation is starting to change. Last year, a new crash test dummy, THOR-05F, based on real female anatomy, was officially introduced in the United States. It is equipped with sensors and improved biomechanics.
Manufacturers are also implementing smarter systems. For example, Volvo’s new EX60 uses an adaptive seatbelt that monitors height, posture, seat position and impact severity in real time, adjusting the tension to suit the individual occupant. This should reduce injuries for fragile passengers and improve protection for larger ones.
Researchers are confident that the combination of realistic female mannequins and smart belts will finally help equalize car safety for everyone.
