The German automaker is considering this possibility as part of cutting costs on creating new models and due to delays in the development of new products. The company admits that demand for electric cars was not as high as expected.

Agency sources said that Porsche’s new CEO, Michael Lighters, may abandon the development of all-electric versions of the 718 Boxster and Cayman sports cars. This scenario is associated with the need to reduce costs, which have increased significantly due to the company’s ambitious plans in the field of electric vehicles.

The main reasons for the possible decision are the protracted development time and the growing costs of the project. Removing the 718 electric line from its product plan will allow Porsche to reconsider its budget and focus resources on higher priorities.

The introduction of a rechargeable hybrid version into the line of budget sports cars will further complicate the situation, since such a car requires a different platform and its development will take several years.

Abandoning the electric 718 Cayman and Boxster is one of the options being considered by the new head of Porsche; a final decision has not yet been made, Bloomberg clarifies. Porsche declined to comment on this information.
