The future of the Cayman and Boxster electric sports car project will be decided at the meeting. With weak demand for electric vehicles and pressure to cut costs, it faces a real threat of closure.

“The fate of whether the world will see, test and buy an electric Porsche 718 Boxster or Cayman is about to be decided. The Drive can exclusively reveal that a meeting is currently taking place in Europe to make a final decision on these electric vehicles, thanks to two sources. The meeting comes just over a week after reports that production of electric sports cars could be discontinued,” The Drive noted.

Reuters reported, citing its sources, that Porsche may abandon the development of the next-generation all-electric Cayman and Boxster.

Delays in development and rising costs were cited as the reason for the likely abandonment of electric sports cars, which was taken into account by new Porsche CEO Michael Leiters, who took office at the beginning of 2026, replacing Oliver Blume as head of Porsche. While the next-generation Boxster and Cayman were originally expected to be all-electric, the current petrol coupe and roadster have been discontinued.
