Dutch studio Niels van Roij Design will enter the restomod market with a bold interpretation of the classic Volvo P1800ES station wagon. The project will be implemented under the new Autoforma brand in partnership with Swedish brand specialists Lotte. The modified car was an attempt to rethink the original taking into account modern engineering capabilities. He received the name Norrsken (“Northern Lights”).
The project is based on the recognizable silhouette of the classic three-door station wagon P1800ES, which was produced in 1971–73. Thanks to its bold design and small production run (just over 8 thousand copies), this shooting brake with its famous glass tailgate has become coveted by many collectors.
In the Autoforma project, the body of the original P1800ES was seriously modified. The car received extended wheel arches, new bumpers with black accents and a developed roof spoiler integrated into the glazing line. The station wagon’s optics are all LED, and the radiator grille has lost its chrome trim in favor of a more aggressive black gloss. However, it is possible to return classic chrome.

The technical component depends on the chosen level of finishing. There are three of them: Heritage Heaven (as close as possible to the original), Modern Marvel and the most radical Forward Fashionista. It is the latter that will become the flagship of the series. This version of the P1800ES provides for the replacement of the original engine with a turbocharged “five” Volvo T5, which is combined with a reinforced modern transmission. The car’s chassis has also been significantly modernized: the suspension geometry has been changed, more efficient brakes with additional cooling and new steering have been installed.
The authors of the project intend to emphasize its exclusivity with a strict production limit – no more than five copies per year. The price starts at € 300 thousand (27.3 million rubles at the current exchange rate), which automatically puts Norrsken on a par with expensive restomods from other tuning studios. The client will be able to see the finished car no earlier than 18 months after confirmation of the order.
