As Motor magazine found out, they plan to earn 315 thousand rubles for a car produced in 1999, and its mileage is 63 thousand km. The car is equipped with a VAZ-341 engine – a 4-stroke, 4-cylinder in-line swirl-chamber diesel engine with dimensions of 76×84 mm, whose working volume is 1.52 liters.
The production of engines was carried out by the Barnaultransmash enterprise, and the diesel “fours” and “fives” were assembled by the Pilot Industrial Production of the Volzhsky Automobile Plant.
The diesel theme did not receive further development: in 2003, the production of VAZ-21 045 station wagons ceased, and the existing 500 VAZ-341 engines were installed on VAZ-21 055 sedans.
It is believed that the main problem of the Barnaul diesel engine is the low mechanical strength of the piston group – the engine takes 30-40 thousand km before repair.

By the way, at the end of 1976, the Volzhsky Automobile Plant produced the first pilot batch of VAZ-2121 Niva SUVs.
For the new car plant, this was an impressive achievement – after all, it was built only for a simple licensed assembly of the Zhiguli (the essence of the “Russified” version of the Fiat 124).
However, in just six years, the design team was able to develop and launch into production a completely original SUV using units from a passenger car.
