As Reuters reports, citing sources, the concern is in negotiations with Leapmotor to create new electric vehicles for Opel and, possibly, Alfa Romeo. In doing so, Leapmotor will supply key electronic and electrical components, essentially performing most of the engineering work.
Stellantis already owns a 20% stake in Leapmotor since 2023 and, through the joint venture Leapmotor International, is helping the Chinese brand enter markets outside of China. If the agreement is finally approved in the coming weeks, the new electric Opel SUV will begin production in 2028 at the Stellantis plant in Zaragoza, Spain, where the Leapmotor B10 will also be assembled from the end of this year.
The annual production volume of Opel can be about 50 thousand cars. In addition, the possibility of creating an Alfa Romeo model on the same architecture is being discussed, which could also be produced in Zaragoza.
Leapmotor is still cautious about commenting on these plans, noting that they are discussing various options for cooperation with partners.
