According to Carscoops, production of the model will end in mid-April 2026.
The reason is to free up capacity to produce the more popular and profitable 2027 Atlas three-row crossover, which has been VW’s second best-selling model in the US for the past three years, while demand for the ID.4 leaves much to be desired.
For all of 2025, Americans bought just over 22 thousand copies of the ID.4, which is 31% more than in 2024, but this is not enough, because over 71 thousand Atlas were sold during the same period. Volkswagen commented this way: the electric vehicle market continues to challenge the industry, requiring informed decisions, and in order to focus on more in-demand models, the company will stop assembling the ID.4 in Chattanooga.
At the same time, thanks to the recently signed contract with the UAW trade union, all 3.2 thousand plant employees will retain their jobs – they will simply be redirected to Atlas production.
As for the future of the ID.4, Volkswagen confirms that “a new version of the ID.4 for the North American market is currently planned for production.” However, the timing has not been announced.
Buyers will still be able to find the 2026 ID.4 at dealers through the end of the year, but there will be no more new cars available from the factory.
