A decrease in oil level and a Check Engine light are signs of a serious breakdown in which you cannot continue driving. Nikita Rodionov, technical director of the international franchise network of car service centers Fit Service, told Rossiyskaya Gazeta about this.
“The Check Engine light on the dashboard and a drop in oil level are sure signals of critical engine failure. <...> When the oil level drops below acceptable values, the oil pump begins to capture air. This leads to a drop in pressure in the lines, and the sensors record incorrect operation. If such malfunctions occur, you cannot use the car,” the expert noted.
According to him, if the oil level drops and the warning light goes off at the same time, you must immediately stop driving. Stop the engine and check the oil level using the dipstick. If it is below the minimum mark, it is prohibited to start the engine. It is necessary to add oil and immediately contact a service station for diagnostics. The optimal solution would be to transport the car on a tow truck. Driving independently to the service center is allowed only after adding oil and provided there is no extraneous noise in the engine operation.
