High boost pressure and strict environmental standards make modern turbo engines vulnerable to popular life hacks. The technical director of the international network of car service centers Fit Service told Motor magazine about this.
“One of the common bad pieces of advice is to get in and drive, cars don’t need to be warmed up. Sharp acceleration after starting is dangerous for a turbo engine. While the oil is cold, it does not have time to reach the turbocharger bearings. There may be scuffing on the shaft, play, or oil leakage. The correct algorithm is 15-30 seconds at idle, then smooth movement until it reaches operating temperature,” Rodionov said.
Another bad tip is to ignore post-load cooling. After a long drive at high speeds, the oil is on the verge of coking. If you turn off the engine immediately, the remaining oil is baked, forming carbon deposits.
This leads to deterioration of lubrication, destruction of bearings and turbine seizure. There is a loss of power and a whistling noise under the hood. To avoid this, you need to let the engine run for 1-2 minutes after the trip.
The Internet is full of recommendations to change the oil after 15 thousand km, as indicated in the manuals. But these figures are given for ideal conditions. In Russian realities, oil loses viscosity faster and oxidizes.
This is critical for turbo engines. Oil degradation affects the turbine, crankshaft and piston bearings. For most turbo engines in Russia, the safe interval is 7-8 thousand km, and for actively used cars or taxis – 5-7 thousand, the expert noted.
The network recommends firmware that will increase the boost pressure. But an increase in boost even by 0.2-0.3 bar leads to an increase in the load on the connecting rod and piston group and increases the temperature.
On modern engines, such an upgrade accelerates wear, provokes detonation and overheating of the pistons, the specialist warned. With proper maintenance, a turbo engine can travel 200-300 thousand km without major repairs. But if you follow life hacks from the Internet, it will come much earlier.
