The company admitted that the first attempt to create an electric car was unsuccessful. The Mustang Mach-E and F-150 Lightning sold decent numbers, but never achieved their desired sales numbers, profitability or cultural impact. Over time, both models were replaced by more efficient and cheaper competitors. The company’s response was a complete restructuring of its strategy, and its main product was a mid-size electric pickup truck worth 2.2 million rubles. Carscoops reports this.
The development of this electric car was carried out in a small secret Ford laboratory, and it has been known about it for a long time. Now the company has lifted the veil of secrecy: it showed its Electric Vehicle Design Center, where a team of top-level engineers works, and gave a brief presentation of the new product to selected journalists.
With 350 employees ranging from veterans to startup specialists, Ford’s California-based Long Beach facility is reimagining electric vehicle manufacturing, making them simpler and cheaper. The basis is the universal platform Universal EV Platform.
The platform is assembled from three large cast sections, which are then combined, and a pickup cab is installed on top of them (other body types will appear in the future). Ford’s all-electric pickup truck has not yet been declassified, but Car and Driver was able to catch a glimpse of the camouflaged prototype. According to his observations, the car retains the classic contours of a pickup truck, its dimensions are similar to the current Maverick, but it has higher body sides.
