Most drivers don’t even realize that improper tire installation can negate the benefits of new tires, shorten their lifespan and create a real safety hazard on the road. The head of technical support at Ikon Tires, Alexander Parkhomchuk, in a conversation with Gazeta.Ru, listed the five most serious mistakes that are made when changing wheels seasonally.
According to the expert, size mismatch is one of the main problems. When purchasing, you need to make sure that the tires are suitable in terms of seat diameter, rim width and offset. Ignoring this rule can lead to serious consequences.
Before installation, you must check the disc for cracks, corrosion, dents and burrs. It is also worth assessing the condition of the paintwork: there should be no deep scratches in the area of contact with the tire, the specialist noted.
Also, before installation, you need to remove old weights and traces of glue, clean the edges of the rim (hamps) from dirt and sealant residues.
The tire changing tool must not have sharp edges. You can only use special mounting paste and in moderation. Its deficiency leads to damage to the side ring, while its excess leads to the tire spinning on the rim. It is also important to set the pressure recommended by the factory.
Tires must be mounted so that they compensate for the power inhomogeneity of the disk. This will help reduce the number of weights to balance. However, no matter how high-quality the balancing is, the final characteristics are directly affected by the condition of the disks themselves, Parkhomchuk warned.
