Unlike Soviet cars, such as the Volga and Moskvich, the gas tanks of modern foreign cars are not equipped with drain plugs, and the hatch behind which the filler is hidden is locked. Mikhail Kolodochkin, an expert at Za Rulem magazine, told Gazeta.Ru whether attackers would be able to drain fuel from the gas tank of a new car.
“It is almost impossible to drain gasoline from the gas tank of a modern car. If in old cars, such as the Volga or Moskvich, there were drain plugs in the gas tanks, then they stopped making plugs. Using a hose to drain gasoline from a modern foreign car through the neck is also not possible due to the complex configuration of the pipeline,” Kolodochkin explained.
According to him, gas tank flaps on the vast majority of modern cars are locked using a central lock. And some cars do not have the usual plug at all – instead, a special valve is installed in the neck of the gas tank. As a result, modern cars are protected from fuel theft much better than classic Zhigulis.
Earlier it became known how long gasoline can be stored in a canister.
