Until September 30 of this year, the country’s road services planned to cover up the names of settlements or install new signs. It was planned to spend approximately 120 thousand euros (1.1 million rubles) for these purposes. However, the Latvian authorities were unable to get the public to recognize that such work was necessary at all.
“On 318 road signs in Latvia you can still read the inscriptions “Moscow”, “Vitebsk” or other names of Russian or Belarusian cities. The initiative to replace them, submitted to the government, has not yet been adopted,” writes Komsomolskaya Pravda with reference to the LSM portal.
Representatives from the CSDD Traffic Safety Analytics Department have previously noted that partially covering road signs is not an optimal solution.
However, according to officials, since we are talking only about direction signs, the disappearance of city names should not significantly affect traffic safety.
