As Sergei Pletnev, director of after-sales service for Avtodom Group of Companies, said, Although the warranty life of the variator is 200-300 thousand kilometers, improper operation and maintenance can reduce this figure several times.
The expert called engine tuning the most dangerous factor: an increase in torque, for which the unit is not designed, sharply reduces its service life.
Other negative factors include abrupt starts from a standstill, towing heavy trailers and constant high load at low speeds. During long stops at traffic lights, the specialist advises switching the lever from the Drive to Neutral position to reduce the parasitic load.
Pletnev also noted the importance of proper maintenance. Oil changes must be carried out strictly according to regulations (every 40-60 thousand km), using only original fluids, since the variator is critical to viscosity and friction properties. In this case, it is not enough to change the oil through the drain plug – a complete replacement is required through an exchanger or with dismantling the pan to remove chips and wear products.
In winter, the car needs to be warmed up for 2-3 minutes at idle so that the oil in the box becomes more liquid. In summer, it is important to monitor the condition of the variator radiator (often shared with the engine): a radiator clogged with lint and dirt leads to overheating.
