The company will build an independent enterprise in China, where it will produce electric vehicles of its premium Lexus brand. Nikkei Asia managed to find out about this. According to sources, the plant will be located in Shanghai and will be ready to launch around 2027. Toyota expects that it will help it strengthen its position in the world’s largest automobile market.

Currently, Toyota produces cars in China only in joint ventures with local manufacturers. For example, it has a joint venture with FAW, which launched production of the new Land Cruiser Prado in Chengdu in the summer. Toyota’s Chinese partners also include GAC and BYD.

Thus, the Shanghai plant will be Toyota’s first local plant that it will operate independently. Toyota itself has not yet confirmed information from insiders.

China is the second most important market for Lexus after the United States. Last year, Americans bought more than 320 thousand premium cars, and Chinese – more than 180 thousand.
