Police in Marietta (Georgia) arrested 32-year-old Russian citizen Albert Konstantin, who is accused of systematically inflating mileage on used cars. CBS News channel reports this.
According to law enforcement officials, Konstantin was engaged in illegal activities for at least two years. He deliberately underestimated the actual mileage of the cars in order to sell them at inflated prices to unsuspecting buyers.
The police conducted a test purchase: an undercover officer tried to purchase a car from Konstantin through the marketplace. During the transaction, the suspect provided a false Carfax report in which the mileage was indicated as 94.5 thousand miles (152 thousand kilometers), while the real one was 288 thousand miles (464 thousand kilometers). In total, according to investigators, at least four buyers were affected by this scheme, and the total profit from fraudulent sales was about $82 thousand.
Konstantin has been charged with four counts of felony fraud and felony tampering with odometers.
The person arrested was transferred to the custody of US Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE). Cobb County Jail records confirm that Konstantin is a Russian citizen.
Marietta police urged anyone who purchased a vehicle from Constantine to check their vehicle history through Carfax and compare mileage readings. Victims of fraud are asked to contact the police station, the channel reports.
