The situation with bad fuel is not uncommon for drivers. According to MARSHALL expert Alexey Abramov, there is no point in panicking: it is important to remain calm and carefully observe the behavior of the car.
Abramov advises: if the engine does not start, do not turn the starter without stopping – this will worsen the breakdown. Immediately call a tow truck and go to a car service center. Clearly describe to the mechanic all the signs of a malfunction, and then wait for the conclusion. In fact, there can only be two outcomes.
The first and best scenario is that the fuel system was not damaged. Then it is enough to drain the gasoline, rinse the tank and replace the filter. The expert strongly recommends changing the engine oil at the same time: there is no guarantee that impurities will not affect its performance. After that, all that remains is to fill in with high-quality fuel – and you can be on the move again. The second scenario is more severe: breakdown of the pump or injectors. Repairs will cost many times more than in the first case.
The car owner has leverage: the gas station is responsible for low-quality fuel by law. Before repairs, you must officially call gas station representatives (by registered mail) to inspect the vehicle and take samples.
At the service station they will conduct diagnostics and take fuel samples. It is important to keep all acts and receipts – they will be needed for the claim. Then you should send a pre-trial claim to the manager of the gas station, indicating the date, brand and volume of fuel.
If the car starts and moves, albeit intermittently, it is not necessary to immediately go to the service center. Abramov recommends adding high-quality fuel (preferably premium) to the tank – most likely, engine operation will be restored.
