Auto expert Zinoviev criticized the used BMW 5 Series for unreliable engines

Despite good body protection from corrosion and good handling, the model produced from 2010 to 2017 had a number of problems with power units.

As “Behind the Wheel” expert Sergei Zinoviev said, almost all engines do not tolerate low-quality fuel and oil, which threatens to burn out the pistons. Already at a mileage of up to 50 thousand kilometers, the valve of the crankcase ventilation system may fail. And then the individual surprises begin.

For 2.0-liter N20 turbo engines (520i, 528i), the oil pump drive and timing chain, which often stretches to 100 thousand kilometers, quickly wear out. In the 2.5 liter N52 engine (523i), the rings begin to lie around the same mileage.

The N55 turbo-six (535i) is famous for problematic injectors that become clogged or leak even at low mileage, and dirty oil quickly causes seizures. V8 N63 (550i) is a real nightmare: oil burns, stuck rings, injector diseases and oil starvation of turbines.

Diesels are also not a gift. The early 2.0 N47 (525d) requires repair of the timing drive every 50-70 thousand kilometers, and by 100 thousand the dampers and crankshaft damper are given in. The most durable engine is the in-line six N57 (525d, 530d, 535d), capable of traveling 350-500 thousand kilometers, but every 100-120 thousand kilometers requires maintenance of the EGR system, particulate filter and replacement of the crankshaft damper, the expert said.

ZF gearboxes – 6HP and 8HP – are generally reliable, but their plastic pan often leaks. For all-wheel drive versions of xDrive, after 150 thousand km, problems begin with the electric drive of the transfer case, front gearbox seals and cardan coupling. Among the little things: the electric drive of the trunk lid fails, Zinoviev noted.
