The list includes engines from the first designs of the late 19th century to modern supermotors, including racing legends and unique engineering solutions, Autocar reports.
The first engine on the list is the 5.5-liter twin-turbo V12 from the Audi R10 TDI. In 2006, this diesel engine did the impossible: Audi won the 24 Hours of Le Mans, and then repeated the victory in 2007 and 2008, and no diesel car has ever won this race before.
The second is the Audi R5, a family of five-cylinder engines, the most famous of which is the 2.1-liter turbo engine from the 1980 Audi Quattro, which helped Audi dominate the rally championship and all-wheel drive turned the car into a legend.
Third place was taken by the 6.3-liter monster from Auto Union V16, designed by Porsche engineers in the 1930s. It developed 545 hp. at low speeds and was used in racing cars.
The fourth is Karl Benz’s 1885 single-cylinder engine from Benz Patent-Motorwagen. With a volume of 954 cubic centimeters, it produced less than one horsepower, but it was installed on the world’s first car.
The fifth is a 21.5-liter four-cylinder monster from Blitzen Benz. In 1909, he accelerated the car to 200 km/h, breaking the speed record.
The sixth is the BMW M20, a classic inline-six introduced in 1977 on the BMW 3 and 5 Series. The 2.0 to 2.7 liter engine was renowned for its smooth operation and was installed in thousands of cars, including the BMW M1 Roadster.
The seventh is the BMW S14, a high-revving 2.3-liter four-cylinder engine from the first generation BMW M3.
Eighth – BMW N74, 6.0-6.75-liter twin-turbo V12 with power from 540 to 620 hp. It was installed on top versions of the BMW 7 Series, such as the M760Li xDrive, as well as on Rolls-Royce cars.
The ninth is the Bugatti W16, an 8.0-liter four-turbo monster with a unique layout: essentially two V8s with one crankcase. In the Bugatti Veyron it produced 987 hp, and in the Bugatti Chiron – 1479 hp.
Rounding out the top ten is the Daimler DB603, a 44.5-liter V12 created for the record-breaking Mercedes T80. It developed around 3,000 hp, but the project was canceled due to World War II.
