Avilon listed 5 mistakes when running in a new car

Many drivers mistakenly believe that the technology of modern cars has completely eliminated the need to break them in. It is the first thousand kilometers that lay the foundation for the longevity of the car, and neglecting simple rules can cost the car owner dearly. Vadim Strelbitsky, director of the mechanical repair department of the Avilon group of companies, told Motor magazine about this.

“The first period, up to 3 thousand kilometers, is important, it is during this time that the components and assemblies grind against each other, and their further service life depends on the rate of load,” the expert explained.

The first common mistake after buying a new car is sudden acceleration and driving at high speeds. Even if the engine and transmission are factory tested, they need time for all operating surfaces to adapt. Aggressive driving in the first weeks can affect engine and transmission wear.

The second mistake is driving for a long time in the same mode. When a driver, for example, drives along a highway for hours at a constant speed, this creates the same type of load. During the break-in period, it is important, on the contrary, to vary driving modes: change speed moderately, avoid both overloads and monotonous driving.

The third mistake is traveling with the maximum number of passengers or fully loading the trunk in the first days of operation. This creates additional pressure on the suspension and braking system during the break-in period.

The fourth point is related to ignoring the manufacturer’s recommendations on speed limits, revs and operating conditions in the first thousand kilometers.

Finally, the first maintenance cannot be postponed: even in the absence of alarm signals, timely diagnostics will confirm that the running-in is proceeding correctly. Just a few weeks of careful driving will preserve the car’s lifespan for years to come, Strelbitsky warned.

Earlier it was reported that car repair prices in Russia have risen to a record high.
