The development of the fifth generation crossover has reached the finish line. On the eve of the world premiere, pre-production prototypes of the new BMW X5 are undergoing final testing in the USA, near the plant in Spartanburg, California. It is there that the production of these cars is established.
The big news is that the fifth-generation X5 will be the first production BMW to be offered with five different types of powertrains. The range will include petrol and diesel versions with a 48-volt mild hybrid, plug-in hybrids (PHEVs) and the long-awaited all-electric BMW iX5. And in 2028, they will be joined by the first production hydrogen car in the history of the brand – the BMW iX5 Hydrogen.
The electric flagship iX5 60 xDrive uses the latest sixth-generation eDrive technology with an 800-volt architecture and cylindrical cells in the traction battery. Its net capacity is 144 kWh for the US market and 141 kWh for Europe. This is the largest high-voltage battery ever installed in a BMW electric vehicle. Two electric motors on the front and rear axles produce a total of 578 hp.

The main know-how of the entire line is the Heart of Joy control unit. Taken from Neue Klasse technologies, it operates ten times faster than previous systems and controls the engine, brakes, steering and recuperation in milliseconds. In addition, the X5 will receive new second-level driver assistance systems with autopilot functions on the highway and in the city, as well as parking assistants that remember up to 600 m of the route and adapt to obstacles on the go. The car will go on sale in the fall of 2026.
