Conflict in the Middle East threatens aluminum shortage for auto manufacturers

Aluminum producers Aluminum Bahrain (Bahrain) and Qatalum (Qatar) are experiencing problems with energy supply, shipment and transportation of metal. This forces car companies to build up reserve stocks. In the future, if the conflict continues, a shortage of raw materials will force automakers to raise prices.

The main advantage of aluminum is its high strength at low weight. Compared to steel, it is approximately 60% lighter, which significantly reduces vehicle weight, as well as fuel consumption and emissions.

Today, body parts, suspension elements and many other components are made from this metal. In some models, 2/3 of the curb weight is made up of aluminum alloys.

In addition to power structures, aluminum is widely used for the manufacture of hoods, doors, trunk lids and alloy wheels, which helps reduce vehicle weight.

The Gulf countries account for almost 10% of the world’s primary aluminum production, and Japanese companies import a quarter of all needed raw materials from the region.
