Reuters: automakers are replacing copper electrical wiring with cheap aluminum

Currently, copper prices are four times higher than aluminum prices, Reuters reports. As a result, more and more car companies are abandoning copper, preferring cheaper aluminum. It is predicted that by 2030, 25% to 30% of copper components could be replaced by aluminum.

Lightweight aluminum is particularly attractive to electric vehicle manufacturers because the reduced weight allows for longer range.

In turn, cost savings are critical for Chinese EV companies as price wars have squeezed profitability.

Aluminum, as analysts note, has great potential for applicability: now about 85% of automotive electrical wiring is still made of copper.

Currently, “winged metal” is used for electrical systems by Tesla, BYD, Zeekr, Li Auto and Xiaomi. BMW and Stellantis plan to follow their example.
