Domestic road services have 26 types of markings in their arsenal. Its lines are not only classic white, but also yellow, orange, blue, red and even black. In some regions, there are markings with two solid and dotted strokes inside. How to interpret these instructions so as not to incur a fine or lose your license? Motor magazine looked into this.
On Russian highways every now and then you come across a configuration where there is a dotted line in the middle of the roadway, sandwiched between two whole lines. The paradox is that such a combination is not in any official regulations.
The current GOST fixes only one combined type (1.11), where solid and broken lines lie side by side. Entering oncoming traffic or changing lanes is only possible from the side of the intermittent element.
What are the types of markup?
The current industry standard regulating road markings in Russia was introduced on June 1, 2018 – this is GOST R 51 256−2018. The document divides all lines into four categories. Horizontal markings are laid directly on the asphalt. Vertical – on curbs, supports, bridge spans and tunnel portals.
In addition, markings are divided into permanent and temporary. And here an important traffic rule comes into force: temporary orange markings have priority over permanent ones. If there are orange and white stripes adjacent to one section of asphalt, the driver must navigate towards the orange ones.
But a “sandwich” of two solid ones with a dotted filling is a direct violation of the standard, indicating an artisanal application. Or the traffic pattern on the road changed: the workers laid two continuous ones, but were too lazy to remove the old intermittent one.
In such a situation, the driver needs to focus on standard elements – that is, on two external solid lines. Crossing them is strictly prohibited. Driving into oncoming traffic through a double solid lane is qualified under Part 4 of Art. 12.15 of the Code of Administrative Offenses of the Russian Federation, which threatens with deprivation of rights for 4-6 months or a fine of 5 thousand rubles (if the violation is recorded by a camera).

White markings are most common. It separates traffic, marks lanes and traffic islands, parking spaces, and also duplicates signs on the asphalt using reflective paint.
Golden rule: solid lines dividing streams are prohibited from crossing. The exception is hitting a solid road at the edge of the roadway if you stop on the side of the road.
An intermittent line with short strokes allows changing lanes, and with long strokes it warns of the imminent appearance of a “solid” line (you can cross it, but it’s better to complete the maneuver). If discrepancies arise between signs and markings, the signs take precedence.

Yellow permanent markings may prohibit stopping and parking, as well as mark the boundaries of intersections and public transport stops. A solid yellow light at the edge of the road works in tandem with a “No Stopping” sign: you cannot slow down here even for a second.
Intermittent yellow is an analogue of the “No Parking” sign, allowing a stop of up to 5 minutes (or more if you need to disembark passengers or unload cargo).
Zigzag yellow markings indicate the boundaries of minibus and bus stops. Regular cars and taxis are only allowed to stop here for pick-up/drop-off.
The “waffle iron” (type 1.26) appeared in 2017 to combat congestion. The rule is simple: if there is a traffic jam ahead and you risk blocking the intersection, you cannot drive onto the yellow grid with diagonal lines. The exception is turning left or right, but even in this case stopping at the “waffle iron” is prohibited. Cameras record standing for more than 5 seconds. Fine – 1,000 rubles under Part 1 of Art. 12.13 Code of Administrative Offenses of the Russian Federation.
Orange temporary markings appear in road work zones and take precedence over white ones. It must be removed after the work is completed. It is usually less resistant to wear.

Red color calls for increased attention. A red field between two broken white lines indicates the intersection of a bicycle path with a roadway. The driver must give way to cyclists. Stopping on a red field is prohibited by clause 12.4 of the traffic rules.
Also, noise stripes are applied in front of zebra crossings with red polymer paint (they do not prohibit movement, but warn of danger). A rare sight – marking 1.24.6 with a red background for parking cars of the diplomatic corps. Important: GOST does not provide for independent red lines – this is only background filling.

Blue markings on the streets of big cities are new. Intermittent short strokes of blue color indicate the boundary of the paid parking zone. This line is always adjacent to the “Parking” sign and the “Paid services” sign. Previously, it was white, but now blue has become a marker for commercial zones. If you stop in such an area, do not forget to pay for parking.

Even the color black has found use in markings. It is used vertically – on bridge supports, curbs and fences to highlight obstacles in the dark. Alternating black and white stripes on curbs visually mark dangerous areas, sharp turns and traffic islands. Black is rarely found on asphalt – for example, when duplicating prohibition signs.
And in Russia there are green markings. In 2025, she appeared in Tula on the Leo Tolstoy bicycle route, which connects the city center with the Yasnaya Polyana museum-estate.
