Filling your car air conditioner with the wrong refrigerant can lead to a fire or costly repairs. Valery Chmelev, head of the Fit Service car service, warned about this.
According to the expert, most modern cars are designed for R134a or R1234yf freons, for which the pressure, boiling point and type of oil are strictly defined. Using cheap substitutes or mixing different types of refrigerant upsets the balance in the system. As a result, the compressor and valves do not work correctly, overheating and unstable pressure occur.
Low-quality substitutes based on propane-butane pose a particular danger: if leaked, such gas is easily ignited by a spark from the wiring or heated elements of the exhaust system. This creates a real risk of a car fire, the specialist noted.
Chmelev urges drivers not to skimp on refilling the air conditioner and to use only the type of refrigerant recommended by the manufacturer.
