Ford hired a secret team of engineers to develop a Tesla Model 3 competitor

As the company’s CEO Jim Farley said on Spike’s Car Radio podcast, the brand will bet on a fully hybrid line of cars, as well as electric cars.

According to the top manager, the new future electric car should be an improved alternative to the existing Mustang Mach-E, which, although affordable, is inferior to Tesla in a number of key parameters: range, dynamics, charging speed.

The future competitor to Model 3 and Model Y will almost be built on the new universal UEV platform (Universal EV Platform). A secret team consisting mainly of former Tesla and Formula 1 engineers was brought in for development. According to Ford, this platform allows for the creation of up to eight body styles, including compact crossovers, sedans, pickups, vans and large SUVs.

The first UEV-based model is expected to be an electric mid-size pickup truck costing about $30 thousand (approximately 2.5-2.7 million rubles at the current exchange rate), which should appear in 2027.

A competitor to Model 3 and Model Y will most likely come out next – either at the end of 2027 or in 2028. Ford has already been winding down some electric programs, including the F-150 Lightning, and shifting its focus toward hybrids, but now, judging by Farley’s statements, the company is again ready to attack Tesla in its key segment of affordable electric vehicles.
