Ikon Tires named three problems for drivers who do not change winter tires in the summer

Using winter tires in the warm season not only threatens the safety and controllability of the car, but also turns out to be unprofitable from a financial point of view. The head of the Group for Customer Technical Support, Testing and Certification of the tire company Ikon Tires, Alexander Parkhomchuk, told Motor magazine about this.

“Summer tires must withstand a wide range of hot temperatures, while winter tires must be prepared for extreme cold. Today it is impossible to create a rubber compound that will maintain high plasticity characteristics from deep minus to heat, for example, from -40 ℃ to +40 ℃,” said Parkhomchuk.

According to him, drivers have a deep misconception that summer and winter tires are distinguished only by the presence of studs, which means that studless winter tires are quite suitable for use in the summer season. The composition of the rubber mixture in summer and winter tires differs significantly.

Another problem is hydroplaning. The expert notes that in winter the main challenge for tires is ice and snow. In summer, when warm, dry weather can suddenly give way to heavy rain, tires must be prepared to effectively drain water from the contact patch.

The tread pattern of winter tires will be less effective in the rain, which can lead to poor handling and lead to an accident. In addition, winter tires wear out faster when exposed to high temperatures than summer tires.

As a result, by the next cold season the set of winter tires will become unusable. As a rule, winter tires are more expensive than summer tires, so you won’t be able to save money, the specialist warned.
