Jeep beats Wrangler’s dangerous rollover tendency

The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) has recorded a landmark event for the Jeep Wrangler: the updated 2026 model year SUV successfully passed a small overlap crash test for the first time and did not roll over on impact.

The rollover problem has plagued the Wrangler since 2019. Due to the high center of gravity and narrow track, the SUV consistently tipped on its side when it hit a deformable barrier. Even the improvements made by the automaker for 2022 did not help – the next crash test again ended in a fall. Now the engineers of the Stellantis concern (which includes the Jeep brand) have managed to solve the problem.

The Jeep Wrangler had to strengthen the frame side members so that during an impact, the wheel and tire interact more effectively with the barrier, redirecting the impact energy and preventing the car from collapsing.

The improvements affected not only the Wrangler SUV, but also the Gladiator pickup truck. As a result, Wrangler and Gladiator built after October 2025 received an Acceptable rating in the IIHS small overlap crash test. This is serious progress compared to previous results.

However, on the front passenger side, experts recorded a high risk of injury to the front passenger’s right foot and lower leg.
