Lawyer Voropaev: Russians face 7 years in prison for boiling gasoline in a garage

In Russia, cases of attempts to independently produce gasoline at home have become more frequent. However, such experiments can lead not only to serious technical problems, but also to administrative, and in some cases, criminal liability. Lawyer Lev Voropaev warned about this in an interview with Gazeta.Ru.

The reason for the warning was alarming statistics: over the past month, the number of Internet queries on the topic of artisanal fuel production has tripled. The specialist emphasized that such actions are regarded by law primarily as a violation of fire safety rules.

According to Voropaev, for individuals who manufacture fuel for their own needs without the purpose of sale, a fine is provided under Article 20.4 of the Code of Administrative Offenses of the Russian Federation – from 5 to 15 thousand rubles. If amateur activity leads to more serious consequences, for example, causing serious harm to health or death, then the case can be reclassified as criminal (Article 219 of the Criminal Code of the Russian Federation), which threatens with imprisonment for up to 7 years.

The lawyer added that if the activity is of a commercial nature, then Article 14.1 of the Code of Administrative Offenses of the Russian Federation (“Carrying out business activities without registration”) applies, the fine for which reaches 2 thousand rubles. In cases where the turnover from the sale of homemade fuel amounts to millions of rubles (which is unlikely in garage conditions), a criminal case may be initiated.

Theoretically, as the expert noted, one can also talk about environmental responsibility in case of soil or water contamination. However, when cooking fuel in a city apartment, these risks, in his opinion, are minimal.
