Mazda suffered $95 million in losses due to Trump tariffs

Due to tariffs initiated by the administration of current US President Donald Trump, the Japanese automaker suffered a loss for the first time since the Covid-19 year of 2020. NHK reports.

For the nine months from April to December 2025, Mazda recorded a net loss of 14.7 billion yen ($94.7 million or 7.3 billion rubles at the current rate. This happened for the first time since the pandemic.

“This is the first net loss for the period since fiscal 2020, when sales declined globally due to the spread of COVID-19. The impact of tariffs imposed by the Trump administration in the United States continues,” NHK noted.

Against the backdrop of Trump’s tariffs on imported goods, Mazda sales in monetary terms fell 5% from April to December 2025 compared to the same period the previous year. The operating loss was 23.1 billion yen ($149 million), and the net loss was the already mentioned 14.7 billion yen.

At a press conference, Mazda CEO Masahiro Moro said the company was optimistic it could make a profit in the October-December quarter.

“However, on an aggregate basis, we are still unprofitable, so we will work hard to achieve profit for the full year,” admitted Moreau.
