Mercedes-Benz recognized the failure of the electrical “Gelik”: there is no demand

The German publication Handelsblatt claims that the sales are so bad that the company can reconsider the strategy for the development of the “younger” model (Baby-G-Class). The unnamed leader of Mercedes-Benz anonymously stated that G 580 EQ Technology “completely failed”, and production volumes are very low. At the same time, the demand for fuel versions of Gelika is growing from year to year.

In response to a request from journalists, Mercedes-Benz did not comment on the statistics of sales of electric Gelik, but boasted an 18 percent increase in demand for the family as a whole. The company also said that they were ready for all market scenarios, and in the 2030s they will continue to offer fully electrical and electrified fuel versions.

According to Handelsblatt, in an incomplete year of sales, 1450 “battery” G-Class SUVs were sold, while gasoline and diesel modifications diverged 9700 pieces. “People want a real“ Gelendevagen ”-with six or eight cylinders,” said the head of Mercedes-Benz anonymously. The reasons for the failure on the surface: the electric car is much heavier, inferior in terms of carrying capacity, cannot tow the trailer, and in general it is much more impractical. The course of the EPA standard is only 385 kilometers.

According to insiders, a commercially unsuccessful electric “Gelik” can force the company to reconsider the plan for a small G-Class analogue. Initially, the crossover was conceived by an electric car, but now on the agenda the issue of adding internal combustion engines. The debut of the “younger” model is scheduled for 2027.
