Mercedes-Benz will install an airplane steering wheel on the failed EQS model to boost sales

According to Carscoops, the German automaker is preparing a second facelift for its flagship electric car, which was an “absolute disaster” – customers simply ignored it. The emergency restyling for 2024 (with a more traditional grille, hood badge and larger battery) didn’t help either.

It is noted that the company will equip Mercedes-Benz with a steer-by-wire system (electric control without a mechanical connection between the steering wheel and wheels) and a new steering wheel, like on airplanes.

Steer-by-wire system will be offered as an option. Mercedes says the technology has been tested over a distance of more than 1 million kilometers. Among the advantages: reduced effort when turning, absence of vibrations on the steering wheel (since there is no mechanical traction) and the ability not to change your grip when maneuvering. At the same time, engineers promise to maintain a “precise, intuitive steering feel” despite the digital nature of this option.

The new steering wheel has a rectangular shape with four spokes and curves at the top and bottom. According to Mercedes-Benz, it provides more space, makes it easier to get in and out, and allows for better visibility of the digital instrument panel – the top of the steering wheel no longer blocks your view. For this design, a unique airbag had to be developed.

Sales of the current EQS have not met expectations, and Mercedes is hoping that a second facelift along with steer-by-wire technology and a steering wheel can turn the tide. Details and an official debut are expected in the coming months.
