New record: sales of electric cars in Russia exceeded 17 thousand units per year

Statistics on sales of electric vehicles on the Russian market for 2024 are published by Autostat. In just 12 months, Russians bought 17,805 electric cars, which is 26.4 percent higher than the 2023 result. At the same time, the growth rate in the segment slowed down, and the share of electric cars decreased from 1.3 percent in 2023 to 1.1 percent in 2024. The leader in sales volumes of electric cars in Russia remains the Chinese brand Zeekr, which is not officially represented on our market.

From the Autostat report it follows that during the year 7,623 Zeekr electric vehicles were sold in Russia – the brand’s models are supplied to the country through parallel imports and it does not have an official representative office here. However, this did not stop Russians from buying twice as many Zikrs as in 2023. The brand accounts for about 43 percent of total sales in the EV segment.

In second place in terms of the number of electric vehicles sold is Moskvich, which has only one such model in its lineup – the Moskvich 3e crossover. It was chosen by 1,796 Russians, resulting in Moskvich’s share in the segment amounting to 10 percent. In third place is another Russian brand, Evolute, which ended last year with 1,226 electric cars sold. His share is seven percent. Moskvich’s sales of electric vehicles increased 3.1 times, while Evolute’s decreased by 39 percent.

The top five also included the Volkswagen and Avatr brands. Electric cars are the first to be supplied to the Russian market unofficially, and Avatr’s interests in the country are represented by Changan, although until recently these cars were also transported as parallel imports. Volkswagen sold 1,012 electric vehicles, down 49 percent from 2023. Avatr sold 690 electric vehicles, and this corresponds to an increase of 2.3 times.

Analysts note that the growth in demand for electric vehicles has slowed down: if in 2023, sales of “green” cars increased by 4.7 times by 2022, then in 2024 they increased by a little more than a quarter.

As for the preferences of Russians when choosing models, the best-selling model at the end of last year is Zeekr 001. Its figure is 5028 units, and its share reaches 28 percent. In second place is Moskvich 3e (1,796 units), in third is Zeekr X (1,407 units), in fourth is Evolute i-Pro (781 units), and the top 5 is completed by Zeekr 009 (713 units).
