Sales of the BMW Z4 roadster with manual transmission turned out to be more popular than cars with automatic transmission.

BMW has released 2024 U.S. sales figures for the Z4, showing that the manual version, which launched early last year, has significantly outpaced the automatic version, accounting for 65 percent of the model’s total sales.

Despite the total number of Z4s sold in 2024 amounting to a modest 2,129 units, demand for the model showed an increase of 13.1 percent compared to 1,883 units sold in 2023. According to BMW, the introduction of a manual transmission was a key factor in the increase in sales, causing an “unusually enthusiastic reaction” from buyers.

It’s interesting to note that the percentage of manual transmission options for the Z4 is almost identical to that of the Toyota Supra, the technical twin of the BMW roadster. Toyota also reported that 65 percent of all Supras sold in the U.S. in 2024 were equipped with a manual transmission, up significantly from the 2023 figure of 43 percent.

Despite this, information previously appeared that the BMW M2 coupe may lose its manual transmission and rear-wheel drive by August 2026. According to BMW Blog, the G87 model will switch to xDrive all-wheel drive with an eight-speed automatic as the only transmission option. Production of the current generation M2 is scheduled to end in July 2029.
