“Secondary” in Russia five times larger than the market of new cars

According to the results of the first quarter of 2025, the Russians bought 1.27 million cars used cars, calculated in Avtostat. This is five times more than the sales volume of new ones, and the difference is growing: last year the ratio was four to one. This is due to the fact that in January-March the primary market collapsed by a quarter, while the “secondary” grew by three percent.

The markets – primary and secondary – differ in structure. So, more than half of the new cars sold in Russia are Chinese models, and on the “secondary” they occupy only four percent. Most used cars (67 percent) belong to the departed foreign brands.

In addition to the fact that the secondary market is larger than the choice of “non -residents”, there are also fewer SUV cars flooding the primary market.

How the cost of popular used Korean sedans has changed in 2025. The import of cars from South Korea grew up to a maximum for a year by Japan reduced car supply to Russia

The share of crossovers and SUVs among mileage machines is only 26 percent compared to 66 percent among new cars. That is, Russians who want to buy a hatchback or sedan, more often take cars “from hand”.

Meanwhile, the global market of new machines is growing. In March, 8.6 million cars were sold in the world – 7.6 percent more than a year earlier. In general, almost 22 million cars were sold for the first quarter (plus six percent).
