Steam-powered motorcycle Force of Nature tested at a distance of a quarter mile

Force of Nature was created by self-taught British engineer Graham Sykes from North Yorkshire. The current – fifth – iteration of the bike features a longer wheelbase, an improved water heating system and an optimized fit.

At the special Festival of Power event at the Santa Pod circuit in the British village of Podington in Bedfordshire, the Force of Nature motorcycle attempted to set a speed record.

The steam-powered bike covered the 402-meter distance in 5.503 seconds, reaching a speed of 311 km/h in the final while accelerating to 100 km/h in 0.7-0.8 seconds—the best result can only be achieved by a jet motorcycle.

Over the 1/8 mile (201 m) stretch, the “Force of Nature” accelerated to 338 km/h, and the travel time was 3.258 seconds. As the organizers of the race note, at the start the pilot experienced overloads of up to 6g.

The machine is equipped with a 120-liter tank in which distilled water is heated to 260°C using a purified kerosene burner. The water instantly becomes steam and is thrown out through the nozzles.
