Steering wheels in cars may be banned in China

The Ministry of Industry of the People’s Republic of China presented a draft of an updated national safety standard regulating the requirements for cars. If the document is approved, manufacturers may be prohibited from installing non-standard shaped steering wheels. CarNewsChina reports this.

The new regulations involve testing where the impact load will be assessed at ten strictly defined points on the steering rim. Rudders with a truncated upper part simply do not have such points – this does not allow meeting the requirements. If the standard comes into force, Formula 1-style steering wheels and any other steering wheels with a partial rim may be banned.

The draft standard tightens the requirements for the permissible displacement of the steering column during an impact and for the airbag deployment algorithm. It is expected that the new rules may come into force on January 1, 2027.

It was previously reported that the Exeed EX7 will be the first in the world to receive electronic-mechanical brakes.
