After several serious accidents in which Tesla’s door handles reportedly failed to open, and subsequent lawsuits, the company introduced new interior handles. For the first time they appeared not on production models, but on the unmanned Cybercab. Carscoops reports this.
Work on creating a mass-produced Tesla robotaxi is in full swing: engineers are constantly making changes to the design. Recently, video bloggers had the opportunity to familiarize themselves in detail with the new Cybercab prototype, demonstrating updated door handles and a number of other technical solutions.
In modern Tesla Model 3, Model Y and Cybertruck, doors are opened both by buttons in the cabin and by physical handles built into the mechanism. In the rear, the emergency buttons are usually hidden under a plastic panel in the door pockets – in an emergency they can be difficult to find, especially if the passenger is not familiar with the car’s operation.
The company proposed a new door handle design: a small latch that, when pressed lightly, activates the electronic opening mechanism, and when pressed harder, performs the function of manual opening. This solution is much more convenient than the current system and is similar to the approaches of Audi and Lexus, where electronic and mechanical opening methods are combined in one element.
