The Ministry of Internal Affairs will allow cars from the Interpol database to be registered in Russia

The Ministry of Internal Affairs published a bill introducing this possibility for public discussion on the Federal Portal of Draft Regulatory Acts. After the law comes into force, cars that are wanted by Interpol will be registered in Russia if the initiator of such a search is an unfriendly country.

The explanatory note to the bill states that the legislation establishes a direct ban on carrying out registration actions with vehicles that are wanted. Moreover, in the case of unfriendly countries, Russian police are unable to find out the reasons why the car is wanted.

“Since February 24, 2022, law enforcement agencies of unfriendly states have been ignoring requests from the Russian side regarding the identification of wanted vehicles. Thus, it is not possible to reliably establish the fact of theft, as well as its circumstances,” the explanatory note states.

The Ministry of Internal Affairs proposes to lift the total ban in Russia on the registration of cars that are on the international wanted list. This will allow bona fide purchasers to operate the transport, the document states.

If a response to a request from an unfriendly country does come, the car’s registration in Russia will be terminated, Kommersant clarifies, citing a source in the Ministry of Internal Affairs.
