As stated by the model’s chief engineer Yoshinori Futonagane, the company’s current strategy assumes that the RAV4 and individual pure-electric models (such as the bZ4X) will exist as parallel, independent product lines, IT Home reports.
The head of development explained that the bZ4X was originally created as a platform for the concentration and development of electrical technology.
Despite the fact that there have already been two experimental RAV4 EVs in the model’s history (the first in 1997 and the second, created jointly with Tesla, in 2012), there are no plans for a third-generation electric RAV4.
At the same time, the current RAV4, which is available in petrol, hybrid and plug-in hybrid (PHEV) versions, will continue to follow the course of electrification, but without switching to an all-electric powertrain at this stage, IT Home notes.
