Volkswagen’s most impressive Golf R ever won’t be available for purchase

The Volkswagen R division returns to the Nürburgring (“Green Hell”) and is preparing something special. It has confirmed its participation in the 2027 24-hour race, marking the 25th anniversary of the Golf R32, the 2002 hatchback that launched the entire R line, Carscoops reports.

Volkswagen’s new racing car is called the Golf R 24h. To create it, the company teamed up with the Max Kruse Racing team, which has competed at the Nordschleife in the Golf GTI Clubsport 24h for the last three years. The concept version has already been presented as a demonstration of the direction of development.

The car is built on the basis of the production Golf R, but received a serious aerodynamic body kit. The kit included a larger front splitter, a ventilated hood, flared wheel arches, a high rear wing and a matching diffuser. The racing version is noticeably lower than the road version and is shod with real sports wheels with racing tires (slicks).

Externally, the new car resembles the existing GTI Clubsport 24h, which is logical, given the use of a common platform and the participation of one team. However, the design is likely to undergo further changes during further developments ahead of its racing debut, scheduled for 2027.

The main innovation compared to its predecessor is under the hood and transmission. Instead of front-wheel drive, like the GTI Clubsport 24h, the Golf R 24h is equipped with all-wheel drive, which makes it similar to the road version of the hot hatchback.
