Volkswagen’s anniversary hatchback, released for the 50th anniversary of the brand, has once again become the fastest front-wheel drive car on the Nurburgring. He beat out the Honda Civic Type R, taking revenge for last year’s defeat. Carscoops reports this.
Fans of the brand remember: in 2016, Volkswagen was already the king of the Nurburgring among front-wheel drive cars – the Golf GTI Clubsport S completed a lap in 7:49.21. True, at that time the distance was 20.6 km, so the result is not fully comparable with the current record. And already in 2017, the Honda FK8 Civic Type R took the title, beating the Clubsport S by 5.4 seconds.
Under the hood of the Edition 50 anniversary model is a 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine that produces 321 horsepower (325 PS) and 310 lb-ft of torque. This makes it the most powerful GTI ever sold, and is only marginally inferior to the heavier all-wheel drive Golf R (329 hp / 333 PS). For comparison, the standard European GTI produces 262 hp. (265 PS), American – 242 hp. (245 PS), and the Clubsport version – 297 hp. (300 PS).
