Ford Mustang GTD sets Nurburgring record

The rear-wheel drive coupe with an 826-horsepower V8 engine drove the famous 20.6-kilometer German track in six minutes and 57.685 seconds. With this result, the Mustang GTD became the fastest American production car on the Nurburgring, but the Porsche 911 GT3 RS of the 992 generation did not break the record – the Mustang was 2.5 seconds slower.

The Mustang GTD, the most powerful road-going Mustang in the model’s history, debuted a year and a half ago. It is powered by a 5.2-liter V8 with a mechanical supercharger and dry sump, which develops 826 horsepower and 900 Nm of torque. The gearbox is an eight-speed preselective “robot”, and the drive is rear-wheel drive. Ford claims that the coupe’s top speed reaches 325 kilometers per hour. This Mustang costs 325 thousand dollars (almost 33.5 million rubles at today’s exchange rate).

Earlier this year, Ford set its sights on the Nürburgring record: the Mustang GTD was tasked with breaking seven minutes, and it met it. Multimatic Motorsports driver Dirk Müller completed the 20.6-kilometer circuit in six minutes and 57.685 seconds. That’s faster than the Lamborghini Aventador SuperVeloce and Ferrari 296 GTB, but 2.5 seconds slower than the Porsche 911 GT3 RS. The record time among front-engine production cars still belongs to the Mercedes-AMG GT Black Series, which in 2020 covered the Nürburgring in six minutes and 43.616 seconds. The Mustang is also far from the absolute record among road cars – it is held by the Mercedes-Benz AMG One (6 minutes and 29 seconds).

However, Ford believes that the coupe has not exhausted its potential and can improve its time on the Nurburgring. So the company intends to keep trying.

It is worth noting that the mentioned Multimatic team took part in the development of the Ford Mustang GTD. The pony car features active aerodynamics, including a rear wing with DRS, carbon-ceramic brakes, push-rod rear suspension and Multimatic ASV adjustable shock absorbers.
