The Ford Mustang GTD Competition has set a new Nürburgring Nordschleife record. The American sports car, which is a road version of the racing car of the same name, covered the track in 6 minutes 40.835 seconds. Ford Racing and Multimatic factory driver Dirk Müller was once again behind the wheel. The previous achievement of the same car was 6 minutes 57.685 seconds.
The new record improves Ford’s result by more than 11 seconds. In addition, the prepared Mustang GTD surpassed the result shown at the Nurburgring by the Chevrolet Corvette ZR1X by 8 seconds. The Mustang GTD Competition holds the two fastest laps of any American marque at the Nürburgring after a record-breaking run. Additionally, the 6:40.835 was sixth all-time in the pre-production and prototype class.
To achieve such progress, engineers focused on four areas: boosting the engine, improving the aerodynamics, using new tires and making the car lighter. If the base Mustang GTD is equipped with a 5.2-liter compressor V8 with an output of 815 hp, then the Competition version has even higher output, although the automaker does not provide exact figures. In addition to the DRS drag reduction system, the car received a modified wing and carbon rear wheel rims that optimize air flow.
The Mustang GTD Competition will remain a one-off item. Ford plans to produce it in a strictly limited edition, and the car will be approved for use on public roads.
